Dated 1857 Kazak Prayer Rug
This rug has fantastic provenance. It was bought around the turn of the 20th century as an antique. It needs a good bath and a tiny bit of restoration. The following letter was written by the rugs last owner for me.
“This rug was purchased at the beginning of the 20th Century by David Saint Pierre Gaillard and Mona Peck Blodgett Gaillard to furnish their private residence in Washington, DC, 1940 Shepherd St. This residence was known as “The Rocks”. They bought all their oriental rugs from Mark Keshishian and Sons, in Washington, DC. The house was purchased in 1985 by West Virginia Senator Jay Rockefeller. David Saint Pierre Gaillard was the only child of Colonel David DuBose Gaillard, who was responsible for the building of the “Gaillard Cut or Culebra Cut” of the Panama Canal. David Saint Pierre Gaillard was my grandfather.” HELEN BLODGETT GAILLARD
