Antique Kasim Ushag
Here is an extraordinary Kasim Ushag rug. The southern Caucasian rugs of Chelaberd, Chondoresk and Kasim Ushag were largely inspired by the earlier indigenous silk Caucasian embroideries of towns such as Zakatala. In this finely woven pristine example, characterized by a brilliant palette, we see a central zoomorphic motif enclosed within a red cartouche, flanked by two pairs of curved devices containing animal like motifs in a style typical of an early Caucasian silk embroidery. The profusion of animal style elements and the rug’s overall organization is an indication that this rug derives its iconography from an indigenous rather than Turkic style, and may well represent a nineteenth century survivor of a long-standing tradition. I have sold many Kasim Ushag rugs but I have never had one with the incredible jewel like colors and fine weave this one possesses. I am not overstating this rugs incredible beauty and rarity when I say that it’s a true museum piece worthy of the finest collections in the world.
